Spotlight on the Netherlands: Salomone Rossi
We continue our long and fruitful association with our partners at Radio Netherlands in presenting a series of concerts from the 2006 Holland Festival of Early Music at Utrecht. We will also direct listeners to their web site, which will provide more in-depth information about the music and performers we hear as well as more information about the festival (www.rnmusic.nl).
For its 25th anniversary, the entire 2006 Festival was dedicated to the early Italian 17th century:
NOTE: All of the music on this program was performed by the Ensemble Dedalus, and is dedicated to the work of Salomone Rossi (1570-c.1630). As the program notes: Two souls, one body: a telling description of the somewhat obscure composer Salomone Rossi. A gifted madrigal composer at the Mantuan court, often working with Monteverdi, he also shaped a Jewish repertoire of liturgical polyphony. The vocal-instrumental Ensemble Daedalus presents a sample of both of Rossi’s main centres of focus: madrigals and sinfonie from various collections, and examples of his Jewish music. All works are by Rossi unless otherwise noted; Hebrew texts in bold.
