Millennium of Music
October and November 2003 Schedule
#03-40: 10/06/03
A Meeting in the Lowlands: The latest recording by the Binchois Consort takes us to a time when the great Duchy of Burgundy met the Royal French Court at Dufay's home cathedral at Cambrai, as Henry Tudor was preparing to cross the Channel to retake England from Richard III.
#03-41: 10/13/03
The Swiss Lute School, continued: A recent recording from the Schola Cantorum in Basel takes us to a great neglected repertoire: In the 15th century, the most popular lute music was for duos--Crawford Young and Karl-Ernst Schroeder recorded an entire disc of this forgotten music.
#03-42: 10/20/03
The Oldest Gregorian Repertoire: We continue our annual autumn series from Norway with the extraordinary Consortium Vocale in Oslo, who have attempted to present the earliest extant chant we can reconstruct, most of which has long-since passed from the active repertory.
#03-43: 10/27/03
Lucidarium in Utrecht: In a happy mixture of many nations, the Swiss ensemble Lucidarium gave in concert in Utrecht featuring the first great Lowlands composer to venture into Italy, Johannes Ciconia, along with the Venetians who were working in the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
#03-44: 11/3/03
A Meeting in Toledo: In early summer 1502, Duke Philip the Fair of Burgundy was escorted into Toledo by his father-in-law King Ferdinand, where they were greeted by Queen Isabella--the greatest lowland of composers of the day travelled along and composed for the occasion, and the latest recording by the Orlando Consort celebrates this meeting.
#03-45: 11/10/03
The Swiss Lute School--The Humanist Households and Universities. Without a base of aristocratic patrons, Swiss musicians were especially attracted to the egalitarian nature of the lute. This recent recording centers on the reformist movement around the University of Basle.
#03-46: 11/17/03
Poetry of Guarini: One of the themes from the 2003 Holland Festival of Early Music at Utrecht was the work of Lowlands composer Phillipe de Monte--this concert by the great Concerto Italiano directed by Rinaldo Alessandrini traces the use of Guarini's poetry from de Monte to Monteverdi.
#03-47: 11/24/03
Living Tradition of the Sephardim: Flory Jagoda again teams with Howard Bass in a program celebrating her family's journey out of Spain into the safety of Turkey, her grandparents' journey to Ottoman Bosnia, and eventually her arrival in America.
#03-48: 12/1/03
Chant from Trondheim: Soon after the founding of the first Christian center in Norway at Trondheim, the Cathedral became a center for chant services celebrating everything from St. Olav to a vial of the Holy Blood of Christ brought to Trondheim in the 1100s--this week, chant from this cathedral.
#03-49: 12/8/03
A Half-Millennium of Swiss Christmas: From the early Medieval city of Sion, chant for the season; and from the high Renaissance, a performance by the Ensemble Lucidarium of popular devotions of the Reformation, when pop songs of the day were given sacred texts.
