Millennium of Music
March 2004 Schedule
#04-10: 03/01/04
Pierre de Manchicourt : This 16th century Franco-Flemish composer went from the Arras (Atrecht) of his youth to the courts of Brussels and Spain; we'll hear both sacred and secular music by Manchicourt this week.
#04-11: 03/08/04
Return to Poland: One of our earliest (and most popular) series on Millennium was dedicated to Polish Renaissance music. This week, we'll hear some import albums given to us by the ensemble Il Canto dedicated to Waclaw of Szamoulty and Marcin Leopolita, both of whom died in 1560.
#04-12: 03/15/04
The Medieval Woman: Two lovely new albums for Women's Music Month: Frederick Renz and the Ensemble for Early Music looks at women as performers, composers, and subjects; and Anne Azema and Shira Kammen celebrate the role of women (particularly the Virgin Mary) in the idea of Miracles in the Middle Ages.
#04-13: 03/22/04
Philippe de Monte at Utrecht, Part 3: Continuing the theme of the influence of this great Franco-Flemish composer from the 2003 Holland Festival of Early Music at Utrecht, this week we hear the Gesualdo Consort contrast de Monte's madrigals with those of Johannes Tollius (born in Amersfoort, travelled through Europe, wound up in Denmark).
#04-14: 03/29/04
Guillaume de Machaut--Dueling Motets: In a fascinating coincidence, we have two recordings of the motets of the greatest 14th century composer--one with the Hilliard Ensemble on ECM, and a limited release by the Ensemble Musica Nova from Lyon on the label known as "Zig-Zag Territoires" (!).
