Millennium of Music
November 2004 Schedule
#04-45: 11/01/04
Juan de Anchieta: When we celebrated the life of Charles V, we focused on those composers who he supported with his patronage. But where did he himself learn his love of music? This week, music of the Basque composer (whose mother was great-aunt of Ignatius Loyola) who follows Juana the Mad to Brussels and becomes tutor to the young Charles.
#04-46: 11/08/04
Cusp of the New: As we heard on our first program from the 2004 Holland Festival of Early Music at Utrecht, one of the themes was the new sound coming from Italy around 1600. This week, a concert of shorter works for voices and instruments from the same era.
#04-47: 11/15/04
Fretwork Plays Ludwig Senfl: This greatest of Swiss composers left a wonderful body of song composition; this new Harmonia Mundi disc with the instrumental ensemble Fretwerk joined by tenor Charles Daniels reminds us of the range and beauty of his compositions.
#04-48: 11/22/04
Russian Monastic Vespers: After a return pilgrimage to the Benedictine Abbey of Chevetogne in Belgium, we have brought back a stunning new body of recordings, as this unique group continues its mission of uniting the ancient division between western & eastern Christianity through musical service.
#04-49: 11/29/04
Thirty Years of Early Music: From the years with the New York Pro Musica to his own Ensemble for Early Music, the successful collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and recent New York Early Music Festival, Fredrick Renz has been a part of the great revival of music in this field; this week he shares with us seven centuries of Christmas music.
