Millennium of Music
May 2005 Schedule
#05-19: 5/02/05:
The Tallis Scholars sing John Browne
Incredibly, it has been some years since there has been a release of entirely new repertoire from the Scholars--the mystical sonorities of this early Tudor composer (fl. 1490) are a perfect match for Peter Phillips' interests and strengths.
#05-20: 5/09/05:
The Rosary Sonatas
As part of the Biber celebrations at the Holland Festival of Early Music 2004, many ensembles presented the beautiful instrumental pieces dedicated to the mystery of the Rosary--this week, Cordaria shares some of these works, as well as pieces by earlier composers who influenced Biber.
#05-21: 5/16/05:
Feast of Pentecost
We return to the Benedictine Abbey of Chevetogne in Belgium with the latest from their stunning body of recordings, as this unique group continues its mission of uniting the ancient division between western & eastern Christianity through musical service.
#05-22: 5/23/05:
Thomas Tallis--Volumes 8 & 9, Continued
The superb project on the English Signum label with the Chapelle du Roi conducted by Alistair Dixon is of such high quality, we will continue this week with the three CDs in two sets that finish the series: "Lamentations" and "Instrumental Music and Songs.".
#05-23: 5/30/05:
Mass for St. Anthony Abbot
Here are the clues--we know that three manuscript masses by the great Dufay are linked--the great, lost, and perhaps first polyphonic Requiem; the St. Anthony of Padua Mass (recorded by The Binchois Consort); and--just possibly--the lost Mass for the early Desert Father St. Anthony Abbot. This week, we hear what the Binchois Consort believes to be the lost masterpiece by Dufay and parts of an Anthony Abbot Mass by Dufay's compatriot, Gilles Binchois.
