Millennium of Music
March 2008 Schedule

Once again, we turn back to a collaboration with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in the presentation of some recent remarkable works in the field of early music with Norwegian composers and performers.

#08-11: 03/03/08Kom Regn: After the fabulously successful Engleskyts from the Kirkelig Kulturverksted label. It features Anne-Lise Berntsen, with Nils Henrik Asheim performing on the Holzhey organ in the cloister church of Weissenau. A decade after that first project, the two reunited for this further mediation on early Norwegian sacred music.

#08-12: 03/10/08Dowland & Froberger: While English by birth, Dowland also served at the Royal Danish court—we’ll hear members of the Norwegian Baroque Soloists with lutenist Rolf Lislevand and mezzo Randi Stene in some of the great songs of Dowland; plus some of the brilliant harpsichord works of Johann Jacob Froberger performed by H.K. Sveen.

#08-13: 03/17/08Exaudium eum: Once again the Consortiun Vocale Oslo brings us a stunning recreation of a medieval service from Norway. Following the recreation of the service for St. Olav, the Office of the Holy Blood, and the service for John the Baptist, we’ll hear chant for Lent and Holy Week from the medieval church of Ringsaker.

#08-14: 03/24/08Det Hellige Kors—Early Norwegian church psalm settings for Holy Week performed by the Oslo Cathedral Choir conducted by Terje Kvam. The Lutheran tradition is reflected in works from the Danish-Norwegian poets (Kingo, Dass, Brorson) whose hymnals defined the 16th and 17th century church style.
