Another great Flemish composer and contemporary of Gombert, the Mechelen-born De Monte wound up bringing the Lowlands sound to Naples, Rome, Spain, Vienna and Prague--the Choir of New College, Oxford, convincingly performs his work.

Phillipus de Monte (1521-1603) was born in Mechelen and served at St. Rombout's Cathedral before serving the Pinelli family in Naples (1541-52). He lived in Rome, then traveled to the court of Queen Mary in the retinue of her husband, King Philip II of Spain. After another stint in Rome, he succeeded Jakobus Vaet as Kapellmeister of the Imperial Hapsburg Court in Vienna and Prague, where her served until his death.
