Program: #05-19   Air Date: May 02, 2005

00:00

All of the music on this program is from the recording John Browne. Music from the Eton Choirbook featuring the Tallis Scholars directed by Peter Phillips. The works of Browne are in the early folios of the Choirbook, dating from between 1490 and 1500. Aside from the five pieces on this disc, there were originally ten others (five are lost, two incomplete). The recording is Gimell CD 036.

As Peter Phillip notes, Browne's music is subtle, almost mystical, despite his colossal textures. Almost no biographical information about the composer is known.

Salve Regina Hail O Queen, Mother of Mercy.
Stabat Iuxta Beside the cross of Christ she stood.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa Stood the sorrowful mother weeping by the cross.
O Regina Mundi Clara O radiant queen of the world.
O Maria Salvatoris O Mary, mother of the Savior.
