This week, the great French medieval ensemble Alla Francesca takes us on a musical journey through the epic Roman de la Rose.

NOTE: All of the music on this program is from the Holland Festival of Early Music at Utrecht 2001. It features the ensemble Alla Francesca.

This repertoire has been recorded on the Opus 111 label. The music describes themes inspired by the influential publication of Jean de Meun's Roman de la Rose in 1270.

I. Le Songe

  • Anon.: Biau m'est, quant voi verdir les champs.
  • Anon.: Je ne chant pas/Talens m'est pris/Aptatur/Omnes
  • Anon.: Je n'aimerai autre/Sire Diex/In seculum.
  • Anon.: Non veul mari.

II. Le Rose du verger et la fleche d'Amour

  • ADAM de la HALLE (1240/50-1288?): On demande mout souvent; Tant con je vivrai n'aimerai autrui.
  • JEHAN de LESCUREL (??-1304): Amour,voules vous acorder que je muire.
  • ADAM de la Halle: Je muir, je muir d'amourete.
  • JEHAN de Lescurel: Abundance de felonnie.

III. La blessure d'Amour et le baiser de Venus

  • GUILLAUME de MACHAUT (c. 1300-1377):Qui plus aimme plus endure.
  • Anon.(<Codex Faenza): Indescort.
  • Anon.: Certainement/Dame vailans/Amis.
  • MACHAUT: De toutes flours n'avoit.

IV. La mervailleuse Histoire de Pygmalion

  •  MACHAUT: Je puis trop bien ma dame comparer; Je vivroye liement.

V. Bel Accueil en la fortresse de Jalousie

  • GILLES BINCHOIS (c.1400-1460): Tristre plaisir et douleureuse joie.
  • GUILLAUME DUFAY (c.1400--1474): Se la face ay pale.
  • Anon.: Enferme suys je en la tour de Bel Accueil.

VI. La conquete de la Rose

  • Anon.: Preambulum.
  • DUFAY: Mon cuer me fait tous dit penser a vous.
