In the opulent court of the D'Este family in Ferrara, no expense was spared for music. When Ercole D'Este sent secretaries out across Europe to find the finest composers, he was told that Isaac was cooperative, personable and would write what the Duke wanted... whereas another letter came to say that Josquin des Prez was difficult, tardy with his compositions, expensive—yet would be "the greatest jewel" in the Duke's musical circle. Ercole chose Josquin... and Ferrara became a giant center of music. This week, with the Folger Consort in live performance, we explore the glories of the late Renaissance, and early musical life at the court of Ferrara.
