In the early summer of 1502, Duke Philip the Fair of Burgundy was escorted into Toledo by his father-in-law King Ferdinand, where they were greeted by Queen Isabella. The greatest lowland of composers of the day traveled along and composed for the occasion, and the latest recording by the Orlando Consort celebrates this meeting.

NOTE: When we celebrated the life of Charles V, we focused on those composers who he supported with his patronage. But where did he himself learn his love of music? This week, music of the Basque composer (whose mother was great-aunt of Ignatius Loyola) who follows Juana the Mad to Brussels and becomes tutor to the young Charles. The music on this program is from a recording by the Capilla Penaflorida (named for an important musical figure in the musical Enlightenment in the Basque Country) and the wind ensemble Ministries de Marsias conducted by Josep Cabre.
